Many people think: the earlier, the better. But this is not true. If you plant garlic too early, when the soil is still warm, the cloves will sprout, and then the first frosts will kill the tender shoots. If you delay, the plants will not have time to root before the cold and will also die. Therefore, it is important to find the golden middle.

When exactly to plant

Everything depends on the soil temperature. You need to plant when the soil at a depth of 5–10 centimeters cools down to +10 or +12°C. In such soil, the cloves will not sprout. At the same time, they will have time to develop roots before the onset of stable frosts.

In Ukraine, this time comes differently depending on the region. In the south, planting can be done from the end of October up to mid-November – winters are milder there. In central regions, it is optimal to plant in October. In the north, it is better to fit into the period from late September to early October. In western regions, garlic is planted in the first decade of October.

There is a simple rule: about 35–45 days should pass from planting to the onset of stable frosts. This time is enough for garlic to root well but not sprout above the ground.

How to understand that the soil is ready for planting

A special device is convenient, of course, but you can do without it. Here are a few simple methods used by experienced gardeners:

dig a hole 7–10 cm deep, place a regular outdoor thermometer there for 10–15 minutes and check the readings;

squeeze a handful of soil – if it crumbles instead of sticking together and is not icy to the touch, then the time has come;

pay attention to trees: when birch leaves turn yellow by about two-thirds, or when linden trees begin to shed leaves massively, these are reliable natural signs.

The place for garlic should be chosen in advance. It is best if cucumbers, zucchini, legumes, or cabbage grew there before. But after onions or potatoes, planting garlic is not recommended – they deplete the soil and leave common pests. Garlic can be returned to the same place no earlier than after 3–4 years.

The bed is prepared 2–3 weeks before planting. The soil is dug to a depth of 20–25 cm, humus or compost is added. Fresh manure is not suitable – it causes diseases in garlic. If the soil is acidic, it is worth adding ash – it reduces acidity and provides potassium.

Planting material also requires attention. Garlic heads are divided into cloves right before planting so they do not dry out. The largest, healthiest cloves without spots, cracks, or soft sides are selected – small ones will produce a small yield. Before planting, they can be soaked for half an hour in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate for disinfection.

How to plant correctly

Garlic is planted in regular rows. Leave 20–25 centimeters between rows and 10–15 centimeters between cloves in a row. The depth depends on the soil. If the soil is light and sandy, the clove can be planted 8–10 centimeters deep. If the soil is heavy and clayey, 5–6 centimeters is enough. The clove is placed root-side down and lightly pressed into the soil. Do not press too hard – you can damage the root base.

After planting, the bed should be mulched with straw, dry leaves, or peat. The layer should be about five centimeters. This will protect the garlic if the winter is low in snow. If everything is done correctly, the garlic will sprout well in spring and in July will produce large dense bulbs. Such bulbs store well until the next harvest.

For those who want confidence without unnecessary hassle, UDAZ offers help with selecting planting material, консультації, and even a full cultivation cycle – from the first to the last stage. This is a convenient option for those who value their time and want a guaranteed result.

Winter garlic is planted in autumn, and the main mistake here is rushing.
